Short Vowel Sounds
The five main written vowels can represent different sounds. In this lesson, you will learn one common short sound for a, e, i, o and u, then blend these sounds to read words and sentences.

Five common short vowel sounds
A vowel letter can represent more than one sound. These models introduce five common short vowel sounds in British English. Other English accents may pronounce some words differently, and those accents are also valid.

The five main written vowels are a, e, i, o and u. A simple word often has a vowel between consonants.

Pronunciation cautions
- Do not send isolated IPA symbols to browser speech. Use complete-word speechText.
- The vowel in hot varies across accents. The /ɒ/ model is common in British English, while other valid accents may use a different vowel.
- Browser voices differ by device and should not replace human-recorded models for precise vowel discrimination.
- Avoid invented pronunciation spellings. Keep IPA visible for reference and model the sound accurately.
